Academic Year or Calendar Year: Which Planner Starts When
Two planners can look identical and be useless to you, purely because of the month they begin. Here is how to tell which one you need.
Calendar year (January to December)
The default. It suits anyone whose commitments reset with the financial or personal year — household budgets, subscriptions, annual leave.
Academic year (usually June or July onward)
Built for students and teachers, whose year starts with a term rather than with January. In India these commonly run June–July to the following May or June, which also happens to fit many businesses that plan around the monsoon and festival seasons.
The 18-month compromise
An 18- or 19-month planner starting mid-year covers both, and is the sensible buy if you are shopping in the second half of the year. You get the remainder of this year plus all of the next, so nothing runs out in December.
Before you order
Check the exact first and last month, not just the year printed on the cover. A calendar labelled 2026–2027 might start in January 2026 or in July 2026, and the difference is six wasted months.
